Albany Court Docket Office

The City Clerk handles vital records, licenses, and other city business. Court docket records are a separate matter and sit with the county and city courts.

Albany City Court Docket

Albany City Court is at 24 Eagle Street. The Civil Division is in Room 209, phone (518) 453-4640, email AlbanyCivilCourt@nycourts.gov. This court handles civil cases with claims up to $15,000, small claims up to $5,000, landlord-tenant disputes, and criminal matters including misdemeanors and violations.

The court docket at Albany City Court tracks every step in a case from start to finish. Each filing gets an entry. Hearings, motions, orders, and the final disposition all show on the docket. For criminal cases, the docket includes the charges, arraignment date, bail information, plea, and sentence. Civil dockets show the complaint, answer, any motions filed, and the judgment.

Albany City Court has a heavy caseload given its role as the capital city. State employees, businesses, and residents all bring cases here. If your case is above the monetary limit for City Court, it goes to Supreme Court and the docket shifts to the Albany County Clerk's files instead.

Criminal arraignments at Albany City Court happen on a regular schedule. If someone is arrested in the city, their first court appearance is usually at City Court. The docket starts with the arraignment and builds from there. Cases involving felonies may be transferred to County Court or presented to a grand jury, at which point a new docket opens at the higher court.

Albany City Court may charge different fees under CPLR § 8019, which sets the schedule for courts below the Supreme and County Court level. Call the civil division at (518) 453-4640 before sending payment to confirm the current rates.

A statewide Criminal History Record Search is $95.00. That covers every county in New York. Results come by email the next business day. This is a different service from what you get by requesting records at the local clerk's office or at City Court.

Under Judiciary Law § 255, the County Clerk must keep and give access to all court docket records. There is no fee to view records in person at the clerk's office. You only pay when you need copies made.

Public Access to Albany Court Docket

Court docket records in Albany are open to the public. Judiciary Law § 4 requires court proceedings to be public, and this extends to the written record. You do not need to be a party to the case. Walk into the County Clerk's Office or City Court, give a name or case number, and staff will help you find the file.
